Persimmon, though belonging to a category of berries, is not a well known fruit in our country. It belongs to the genus Diospyros and is divided into the astringent and the non astringent types. The former contains high levels of tannins and is quite unpalatable in an unripe form. The unripe fruit tends to leave behind a dry and powdery texture which is not very delectable.

However, in it’s ripe condition, the fruit is known to be quite soft, sweet and tasty. The color of the skin often varies from a deep yellow to an orange color. It appearance also looks like that of a tomato. The fruit is commonly found across the South East Asian region, though some varieties are also grown across Europe.

In ancient Greeks, Persimmon was often remarked as the ‘Divine Fruit’ due to its various health benefits. Being a low calorie fruit, found in both astringent and non astringent forms, it could be eaten either raw or dried. It is also richly added to puddings to enhance their flavor. The fruit comes enriched with a variety of minerals such as Phosphorus, Calcium and Vitamins such as A and C. Apart from its various uses, the fruit is also known for its amazing health benefits.

The fruit contains around zero or no fat at all, which makes it one of the best fruits for people on a diet. Persimmon is also high in fiber content, which makes you feel fuller for a longer duration during your weight loss regime. It also reduces the craving for sugar or other kinds of processed foods. The sugar content found in Persimmon is high which helps the body to convert it into energy during the course of your exercise regime. The water content of Persimmon is another factor which helps in the total workout by replenishing the amount of water which is lost from the body in the form of sweat.

The Persimmon is known all over the world as a fruit with Chinese origins. It is cultivated all over China and Japan in abundance. However, a lot of people are not aware about the correct way to consume this fruit. So, here are a few simple steps to consume Persimmon correctly:

  1. Choose a ripe persimmon as it should only be consumed in its ripe form; otherwise, it could be a very bitter fruit to consume. In order to choose a ripe fruit correctly, you need to observe it clearly. The skin of the fruit will be almost transparent and smooth. Also, pay attention to the color of the fruit. It should be orange overall. Let it sit on the kitchen counter and ripe until it is bright orange in color. Fuyu Persimmons are short and firm in appearance. They are crisp and sweet and their skin can be peeled off. They make excellent ingredients for salads and cakes. Hachiya Persimmons on the other end are longer and peach shaped in appearance. They need to be eaten while they are soft and best chilled. They are excellent for cooking.
  2. Wash the Persimmon properly. Do this in a very gentle way using a basic and mild vegetable washing liquid. Alternatively, you can allow the fruit to lie for sometime whole the water flows over it.
  3. Remove the leaves off the fruit. Using a sharp knife cut off the leaves on top of the fruit. If you wish, you could also peel off the skin of the fruit. However, it is edible. Peeling is usually done for cases where the fruit is needed for cooking. Cut the Persimmon in any shape that you desire.
  4. The Persimmon can be consumed fresh or it can be cooked. Persimmons can be actively used to make up jams, marmalade, compote or salads. They make for excellent sorbets as well.

Persimmon Cookies: A famous recipe

There are many different ways in which you can experiment and cook with Persimmon. However, Persimmon Cookies remain the most popular choice of people all over the world. So, here we present to you the amazing recipe for making these delicious and crunchy cookies.

Persimmon Cookies

Ingredients Needed:

½ cup shortening

1 cup sugar

1 egg

1 cup Persimmon Pulp

2 cups flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)

½ teaspoon cloves

½ teaspoon nutmeg

1 cup walnuts (chopped)

1 cup raisins

Method:

Step 1: Preheat the oven to about 350 degrees. Grease the line of a baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside.

Step 2: In a medium sized bowl, add and whisk together flour, soda, salt and spices. Set it aside.

Step 3: In a separate bowl, cream together the shortening with sugar with the help of a hand mixer. Beat in an egg with it along with some Persimmon pulp. Keep on beating the mixture slowly until everything has been combined. Add some stirred nuts and raisins in it.

Step 4: Drop the rounded spoonfuls of this mixture on the baking sheet. They need to be placed close together as these cookies do not tend to spread.

Step 5: Bake this for about 12-15 minutes. Let the baking sheets cool for about 5 minutes before removing it off the wire rack to cool it completely.

Side Effects of Persimmon:

Persimmon may have a variety of health benefits, but there is a need for caution in its consumption due to a high amount of Tannin, which adds to the risk factor. Tannin, when consumed in a high quantity, can have many anti nutritional and toxic effects on the body. It is also recommended to not consume unripe Persimmon as it contains a high level of Tannin which can leave your mouth feeling quite dry and numb for some time.

Also, consuming the fruit on an empty stomach or in excess can lead to Diarrhea. Therefore, it is recommended to eat the fruit in moderation and limited quantity. People suffering from Diabetes too should eat the fruit in moderate quantity as it contains high amounts of glucose and can elevate the blood glucose level.
