5 Ways to Remove Pesticides From Your Fruits & Vegetables

You wash our hands before eating or handling food and tell your children to do so too, but have you ever wondered if the food you are eating is safe? Store bought fruits and vegetables are treated with pesticides and washing them with water alone is not going to remove all the residue of the harmful chemicals. Researches show that consumption of pesticides can pose serious health risks to you in the long run.

Farmers use pesticides and artificial chemicals to produce large quantities of fruits and vegetables and also to get rid of rodents and insects. These pesticides are formulated in a way that when they are sprayed on the crops, they adhere to them which preventspests from attacking them. Many people consider washing fruits and vegetables in liquid dish wash but that too can be harmful if you ingest any soap residue. Here are 5 simple ways to get rid of pesticides from your food.

1) Vinegar Solution

A vinegar solution is proven to be the most non-toxic and safe way to remove pesticides from fresh produce. Wash the fruits and vegetables in running tap water to scrape off most of the dirt. Then, in a large bowl, put one cup of plain vinegar and 4 cups of water. Soak the washed produce in this solution for half an hour. Remove and wash it again before consumption.

2) Baking soda

Baking soda is another easy and effective way to get rid of harmful pesticides. Once the fresh produce is washed in tap water, soak them in a baking soda and water solution. After about 20 to 30 minutes remove the fruits and vegetables from the solution and wash them thoroughly to remove all residues.

3) Sea Salt

Sea salt works effectively to remove chemicals from fresh produce too. Make a concoction of a handful of sea salt with 3 to 4 cups of water in a big bowl. Stir till the salt dissolves and soak the produce in this solution for a couple of minutes. Remove and wash under running water to get rid of the salt. Your fresh fruits and vegetables are now pesticide free and safe to consume.

4) Lemon Juice

A solution of lemon juice and baking soda can also be used to remove pesticides from food. Just add the juice of one lemon and a spoonful of baking soda in a bowl of water and soak the fruits and vegetables in it. Drain the solution and wash under running water.

5) Organic Produce or Kitchen Gardens

Organic food is quite a rage nowadays. More and more people have started opting for food that are chemical and fertilizer free. Organic produce is safe for consumption and it also has more nutritional values than your everyday produce since they are not chemically treated or given any growth boosters. However, organic foods are not always available and are quite expensive.

If you can’t lay your hands on organic food, then having your very own kitchen garden is the best option. Of course you cannot grow everything in your garden, but a few herbs and vegetables are definitely possible. You will know exactly what goes into your fresh produce.

Apart from these 5 ways to remove pesticides from your food, you can also remove the skin of most fruits and vegetables to remove any traces of harmful chemicals. But do not forget to wash them first!
