7 tips to Prevent Hair Loss

Losing precious scalp hair is one of the worst nightmares for any man or woman. Excessive hair loss dents one’s self esteem and makes one appear older than his/her age. Even though losing about 50 to 100 hairs a day is considered to be absolutely normal; looking at fallen hair usually rings warning bells for most of us. So when does hair start falling beyond the normal range? A number of factors are responsible for this, including an inadequate diet, extreme weather conditions, chronic stress, certain medical conditions and use of excessive hair styling products. Over use of heat styling tools such as hair irons and curling rods also causes hair fall.

But wait, do not fret. We realize that most of us battle a few or all of these factors on a daily basis. So we’ve come up with ways to lessen their impact and minimize the occurrence of hair fall. Here are 7 super effective tips to fight hair loss.

Eat nutritious food

However expensive products you use and however much you take care of your hair externally; if the hair roots do not receive adequate nourishment, you will continue to lose hair. The hair structure is made up of protein, thus making protein an indispensable hair nutrient. Other important hair nutrients include

Vitamin A, Vitamin E, omega 3 fatty acids, zinc, selenium, and several other vitamins and minerals.

This nutrient base can be easily achieved by eating a few servings of fruits, nuts and vegetables on a daily basis. 

Keep your Scalp Clean

Our scalp contains numerous

sebaceous glands

that keep on secreting an oily substance known as ‘sebum’ on a daily basis. The amount of sebum is what determines whether an individual will have a dry scalp or an oily one. Excessive sebum deposition onto the scalp tends to attract a lot of dust and bacteria, making you prone to scalp infections that lead to hair loss. Thus it is very important to keep your scalp clean at all times. 

Wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo to

remove dirt, grime and excessive oil.

Ideally it is advisable to wash scalp every alternate day; however you may increase or decrease the same depending upon the oiliness of the scalp. Make sure you use good shampoos, and not ordinary bathing soaps to wash your scalp. 

Oil those tresses

Your grandmother was right. For healthy and shiny hair, you need to oil your hair regularly. Regular oiling not only nourishes and strengthens hair, but it also makes hair shiny and thick.Massaging the oil into the scalp increases the blood circulation to hair roots, thus aiding the delivery of adequate nutrition. You need not opt for expensive variants; your regular

coconut oil

will do. For added benefits, you may add a few drops ofcold-pressed essential oils such as

geranium, almond or argan

Apply hair packsto prevent hair loss

Hair packs help to moisturize hair making it glossy and shiny. Due to better texture and lesser tangles, your hair is less prone to breakage. Hair packs also removethe excess oil from the scalp which contributes to hair loss. You can make a homemade hair mask by mixing a

mashed banana with olive oil.

Other effective ingredients for hair masks are a

mashed avocado with olive oil or an egg mixed with coconut oil

A hair mask must be massaged onto the scalp and left for about half an hour before being washed off with your regular shampoo. 

Avoid heat styling tools

Yes, those tools are indispensable, but try to limit their use to special occasions only. Overusing your 

curling irons and hair straighteners

make your hair weak and brittle, leading to dryness and eventually hair loss. On a regular basis, please allow your hair to air-dry naturally in order to minimize hair loss. Avoid hairstyles such as tight buns and ponytails which pull hair tightly leading to hair fall. 

Keep your combs clean

Make sure that you clean your combs and brushes regularly. Brushing hair with dirty combs and brushes leads to accumulation of dirt on the hair and scalp, which over time leads to hair fall.Soak your dirty combs in hot water and mild shampoo and clean them with an old toothbrush. 

Use Wide Toothed Combs

Always use a wide toothed comb to brush hair as it is great for untangling hair without causing hair breakage. Also avoid combing your hair when it is wet, as hair is more prone to breakage. While combing, never start from the root to tip. Always detangle your ends first and comb through from the scalp downwards.
