A large number of people all over the world presume that CT Scans, one of the major diagnostic tools available to us, is safe. If you are one of those people, read this:
A study conducted in 2007 ruled out around 200,000 people all over the world were projected to develop cancer due to a CT scan! Shocking, is it?
Today, doctors tend to recommend CT Scans three times more as they did back in 1993. But new scientific evidence has proved that sometimes this over exposure to the radiation is one of the major reasons why people develop Cancer and other terminal diseases. Getting one single CT scan is equal to 442 chest X rays as suggested by the National Cancer Institute.
Though getting a CT scan is known to be lifesaving, yet more often than not, these scans are prescribed even when they are not necessarily needed. Suspected Kidney stones, head trauma as well as abdominal pains are some of the major reasons why unwarranted scans are prescribed to the patients.
In case you are wondering how to get past the disadvantages in order to make the most of your CT scan, here are a few tips:
- Always ask your doctor if the scans results can change your treatment plan. In case he says no, then what is the need for a scan?
- Check out the other alternative tests which are available in the market which involve the use of lesser radiation and provide sufficient information regarding your diagnosis.
- In case your child has been prescribed a CT scan, make sure that you talk to the machine technician in order to ensure that the machine’s settings have been set to the levels needed for a Pediatric Exam. For children, it takes lesser radiation in order to produce the needed results. Also, kids are more vulnerable towards radiation.
