There is no doubt about the fact that Dogs are some of the most friendly and playful animals. However, a survey has recently suggested that on an average all over the world, around 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs. Though dogs are not known to be generally as very aggressive animals, however, children have proved to be one of the most common victims of dog bites. They are the ones which are at the greater chance of being bitten and being injured. Most of the dog bites tend to occur while the children are engaged in playfully interacting with the dogs.

Therefore, some of the best ways to prevent your kids from dog bites are as follows:

Tips for the Parents:

  • Dogs do not like kisses: Though it may seem like a very adorable thing to do, make sure that you teach your kids to avoid kissing or hugging a dog directly on the face. In most of the cases of dog bites, the family dog was being kissed right in the face. Instead of hugging or kissing the dog, make sure that you teach the kids to scratch the belly, chest or the neck of the animal. Dogs appreciate the gentle scratching as compared to kissing.
  • Stand still In Front of a Strange Dog: Strange or Stray dogs are another huge threat to the children. Therefore, teach the children to stand very still in front of a strange dog. Strange and still things prove immensely boring to the dogs and they will eventually move ahead. This trick works every time and can prevent the children from being hurt from a strange dog.
  • Avoid the Teasing: No animal, be it stray or pet should be teased. When a dog is taking his nap, eating or is protecting something, it is very unwise to disturb the dog. Also, tugging and pulling the tail and ears of the dog too, can lead to the animal being agitated and biting the person.
  • Get the dog neutered: Scientific research has just proved that dogs that have been neutered and have been sprayed, have a cooler and calmer temperament as compared to their non-neutered counterparts. Therefore, make sure that your dog is neutered in order to lessen the chances of them being aggressive and less socialized.
  • Conditioning of the Dog: Positive conditioning of the dog is very important in order to allow him to live in a family. Therefore, make sure that you provide your dog with a lot of positive energy and experiences. Also, use some amazing methods such as clicker training in order to train your dog about the positive things.
  • Supervision of the Dog: As said earlier, whenever your dog is around the children, make sure that you do not leave your animal unsupervised. Children should abstain from kissing or hugging the dog on the face. In case you have children visiting you and they are bothering your dog, make sure that either you send your dog away for some time, or you send back the children home as the chances of your dog biting these children can be pretty high in such cases.
  • Ensure the supervision: No matter how good your dog is with the kids, do not leave him unsupervised with the kids. In case of toddlers the risk is even higher. Do not take a chance and leave the dog alone with the child under any circumstance.
  • Training of the Dog: Obedience classes are a huge hit in the market these days. Therefore, make sure that your dog is taken to one of these classes and is taught with the help of a positive reinforcement schedule. Do not train the dog by using your force alone. If dogs are treated in this way, then it can lead to the animal turning aggressive and hurting you instead. Make sure that children too are made a part of the training regimen of the dog. However, children should never be encouraged to punish the animal. With the help of the positive experiences, teach your dogs to enjoy the family experience with the children all around.
