Dysuria - Overview

Dysuria, which is also known as painful urination, is a condition in which a person suffers from pain or burning sensation during urination. This pain is basically felt in the tube which is responsible for carrying the urine from the urinary bladder to the perineum (the area surrounding the genitals). These painful bouts can be felt by almost anyone.

Dysurias are one of the most commonly known symptoms for urinary tract infections and are found more commonly in women as compared to men. In men, the condition is less common as compared to women and is commonly caused due to urethritis and prostate conditions.

Causes of Dysuria:

There are a lot of conditions and substances which are responsible for Dysuria in people.

Some of the major ones are as follows:

  •   Bladder or Kidney Stones
  •   Chlamydia
  •   Cystitis ( Infection in the Urinary Bladder)
  •   Drugs which are used for the treatment of cancer those lead to bladder infection as a side effect.
  •   Genital Herpes
  •   Gonorrhoea
  •   Certain soaps and perfumes
  •   Kidney Infections
  •   Kidney Stones
  •   Prostrate Inflammation
  •   STD’s (Sexually Transmitted Diseases)
  •   Vaginal Infections
  •   Infection of the urethra
  •   Urinary Tract Infections
  •   Yeast Infection in the Vagina

It is recommended to see a doctor if you are suffering from signs such as:

  • Persistence of painful urination
  • Drainage or discharge from the penis or the vaginal area
  • Passing of blood in the urine
  • Persistent fever
  • Pain on the side or the back of the person
  • Passing of the kidney or bladder stones

Diagnosis and Treatment of Dysuria:

The doctor orders a urinalysis to done in order to determine the condition. In some of the rare cases, a urine culture may be ordered. If a person has already been afflicted with a bladder or a kidney infection, then a physical examination as well as the medical history of the person is checked. In these cases, the lab studies are done in order to determine the condition.

Also, a pelvic exam is done along with the examination of the vaginal fluids. Urethral swab is done for men who are suffering from a discharge like condition.

Treatment of the disease is greatly dependent on the cause of the problem.
