A recent study has found that hookahs or popular water pipes are not able to get rid of the smoke of heavy metals.
Contrary to what most people around the world think, hookah water pipes are known to not filter out the heavy metals found in tobacco. Tobacco plants are known to absorb and accumulate many heavy metals such as Copper, Iron, Chromium, lead and Uranium. If a person is in a long term exposure to these heavy metals, it can increase the risk of the smoker to develop head and neck cancer as well as many other diseases in the longer run.
It is a common believed fact that hookahs filter out the heavy metals found in tobacco, which makes them a safer choice as compared to cigarettes. However, recent research studies have concluded that hookahs are known to remove only about 3% of the heavy metals which are found in tobacco. This is not enough to prevent the high exposure to the heavy metals amongst smokers.
With the increasing trend all over the world to smoke water pipes or hookahs, the research has pointed out to the new evidence towards the possible health hazards posed by hookahs. More people need to be aware of the dangers of smoking Hookahs, as suggested by the researchers.
At the present rate, the hookah industry all over the world is operating without any regulation and the impact of smoking water pipes on people has not been investigated thoroughly. It is therefore, very important to check for the regulation of hookah smoking on the general public and to take a step towards the correct labeling of the hookah products in order to make sure that people are aware of the dangers posed by the toxic substances found in the tobacco.
