How to Prevent Grey Hair

Your hair defines you. Hair is one asset that can make or break our confidence. That is why when we notice the first signs of grey hair, we start feeling old and less attractive. However, grey hair doesn’t always have to be a sign of age. There are a huge number of people who suffer from premature greying of hair. The colour of our hair comes from pigmentation from the cells present in the hair follicles. As we age, the cells stop producing the pigments and that makes the hair turn grey.

Premature greying of hair can be due to various reasons. Stress and poor diet being the most common ones. One might also suffer from premature greying if it runs in the family or due to diseases like typhoid. To prevent grey hair one needs to eat healthy and avoid oily and overly spicy food. Alcohol and coffee should also be taken in moderation as they are known to cause premature greying of hair. Apart from that, the most important thing to do is to keep a check on stress and tension.Here are a few ways to get rid of grey hair.

Onion Juice

Onion juice has been used for ages and works wonders when it comes to hair care. It is one everyday item that not only prevents greying of hair, but also prevents hair loss, promotes hair growth and treats infections too!

Grate a medium sized onion or use a juicer to extract the juice and massage it on the scalp. Leave for an hour and wash thoroughly with lukewarm water. Do this for 3 to 4 weeks and you will notice a decrease in grey hair. If you find the smell to strong, dilute the juice with some water. It works just the same!

Indian Gooseberry

Indian gooseberry or amla, is considered a miracle product for hair care and treatments. It has several uses in Ayurveda and is considered to be the best natural remedy for getting rid of greying hair. Amla is rich in antioxidants and vitamin C.

There are many ways to use amla for reducing greying of hair. The best way would be to include it in your everyday diet. But if fresh ones are not easily available, then you can also use dried amla. Applying amla oil or hair mask is another known way to get the same results. Make a paste of amla powder, lemon juice and yogurt. Apply this paste on your scalp and hair. Leave for 30 minutes and wash with lukewarm water.
Another way to use fresh amla is to boil some of it in some water. When the water turns blackish colour, remove from heat and let it cool. Once the amla water is in room temperature, apply it on your hair and scalp. Wash after an hour. Do this a few times a week to get visible results.

Curry Leaves

Curry leaves are a common kitchen item in Southeast Asian homes. It is not only used for cooking but is also known for its medicinal purposes. Some researches show that people who consume more amount of curry leaves in their daily diet, are less prone to grey hair. Curry leaves have a natural pigmentation that helps revive the lost colour of hair. 

Apart from having these leaves in your food, you can also apply their paste or juice on your hair. To get even better results, mix a few drops of coconut or almond oil with it. Wash thoroughly with warm water. Do this for atleast a few weeks to get thick black hair naturally.

Henna

Henna is widely used in Indian households to colour grey hair. It has natural pigmentations that work as a dye. However, it is only recommended for people who have oily hair as, over use of henna might dry out your hair.

Make a pack of henna powder, yogurt and fenugreek seed’s paste. Apply this on your hair for about an hour. Wash using a mild shampoo. The henna will not give you dark black hair, but a reddish tinge.

These were a few ways to get rid of grey hair and make it thick and healthy with ingredients that are easily available in your home.
