Protecting The Elderly From Falls

As we tend to age, we become more prone to accidents and falling down. Elderly people are at a higher risk of falling down, owing to their poor eyesight, increased heart problems, muscle weaknesses as well as due to medications that they take. However, the good news is that we can help minimize the risk of our elderly relatives of taking a tumble. Check out the following precautions that we can take in order to minimize their risk of falling down:
- Check out with their General Practitioner whether the medication they take is affecting their sense of balance. If it is so, then you can always look for an alternate medication.
- Encourage the elderly to exercise. Doing Yoga can help them to improve the stability and weight bearing exercise can help them to improve their muscle as well as bone strength.
- Make sure that their home is free of clutter and the lightening is adequate enough. Install handrails all along the stairways, around the bathroom as well as other potentially slippery areas. In the bathrooms, make sure to use skid free tiles in order to reduce the chances of slipping and falling down.
- Experts have also suggested that improving the overall management of the existing medical conditions, such as organizing an eyesight check up periodically and removing unwanted obstacles such as lighting wires and mats is known to decrease the chances of falling down.
