Skin Rashes are quite common amongst pregnant women all over the world. Around one in every 150 women suffers from skin rashes during the course of their pregnancy. PUPPP stands for Pruritic Urticarial Papules and Plaques of Pregnancy. PUPPP is often an itchy, bumpy rash which develops around the abdomen near the umbilical area and spreads around the thighs. It is very common amongst first time mothers and those who are carrying multiples.
In some cases, itching can become very severe and can spread to the rest of the body, except the face. However, PUPPP does not pose any risk to the baby.
Causes of Rashes:
Unlike other symptoms of pregnancy, PUPPP does not occur due to an increase in the levels of hormones. The fetal cells tend to invade the mother’s skin during pregnancy and causes PUPPP to develop. As per another theory, PUPPP can be genetic and can be traced to the father’s side. PUPPP occurs during the third trimester and tends to disappear after the childbirth.
There are many remedies for PUPPP. Try eating an oatmeal or baking soda bath. You can also apply cold compresses. Applying an aloe Vera gel after the shower or to put soft cotton clothes can help as well. In case the itching become unbearable, it is important to check in with your doctor as soon as possible.
Oral steroids are not recommended during the course of pregnancy. When you are close to the delivery date, the doctor might consider inducing labor in case the itching is very intense.
