The ancient Indian adage, ‘You are what you eat’ is entirely true. The more junk you consume, the more depressed you are going to be!

Getting your diet on track has proven to increase your happiness level.  A recent research has proven that depression can be co related to junk food. Western diets contain high amounts of refined carbohydrates. White breads, biscuits, pastries and pizzas cause inflammation and are rich in carbohydrates. Inflammation plays a major role in causing depression.

So, here are a few foods which can boost up your mood!

  • Leafy greens and citrus fruits: These foods are rich in folate which makes them natural antidepressants. Studies have shown that people suffering from depression have a low level of folate in their body. These people are also less responsive to antidepression medications.
  • Brown Rice, Eggs and Meat: These foods are rich sources of Tryptophan, which is converted by the body into serotonin. Serotonin is responsible for regulating the amount of sleep and the overall mood of the person.
  • Walnuts and Linseed: Fish, nuts and seeds are the major sources of Omega 3 Fatty acids. These acids are known to improve the mood and sharpen the memory.
  • Sweet and starchy carbohydrates: Taken in moderation, these tend to perk up the mood. Carbohydrates are known to raise up the level of serotonin in the body which acts as a natural tranquilizer.
