If you have ever used an indoor or an outdoor swimming pool, you would have noticed the chlorinated stench arising from the water. However, a recent study which had been conducted on the effects of medical and personal care byproducts on water has revealed some startling news for all the swimming addicts. A research team recently looked deep down the community swimming pools of different colleges and analyzed the samples which they obtained from these pools.
The researchers were able to identify three major substances, DEET (a major ingredient of bug sprays), caffeine and flame retardant known as TCEP in the water.
Though researchers were not able to understand as to how TCEP ended up in the water, they were able to conclude that the DEET from the bug spray was able to end up in the water after being washed off from the swimmer’s bodies. The caffeine in the water could have been introduced from the human excrements in the pool, such as sweat and urine.
Earlier research studies were able to find the remnants of lotion and sunscreen in the water. It could be also possible that more PPCP’s and human waste products could have been found in water from different locations. However, it has been pointed out that this not a cause for alarm.
Scientists have advised swimmers to avoid ingesting any pool water. It is also recommended to take a shower after you swim, in order to get rid of the lotion, bug spray and other cosmetic substances off your body.
