Vitamin B1 : Overview
Vitamin B1, which is also known commonly as Thiamin, is known as a kind of B- complex vitamin. Commonly, Vitamin B1 is found in all variety of foods in adequate amounts. However, Vitamin B1 deficiency is one of the most common kinds of vitamin deficiencies all over the world. Food processing is one of the major reasons for this deficiency as this vitamin is the most prone to destruction via food processing.
Food products such as yeast, cereals, grains, nuts and fruits are some of the richest sources of VItamin B1. Thiamin is known to cure digestive problems such as poor appetite, ulcers as well as diarrhea. Also, it is used in order to boost the immune system in case of patients who are suffering from AIDS. Thiamin is a greatly used to prevent cervical cancer and type 2 diabetes.
Thiamin is used by the body in order to properly use carbohydrates. Thiamin shots are often provided to cure memory disorders such as Wernicke's encephalopathy syndrome.
Uses and Effectiveness of Vitamin B1:
Thiamin Deficiency is one of the major conditions which can be treated with the help of Vitamin B1. Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome, which is caused due to low levels of Thiamin is prevalent in alcoholics. Giving Thiamin shots is known to decrease the risks of WKS to a great extent.
Thiamin is also known to correct certain genetic diseases, such as Leigh's disease and Maple Syrup Urine Disease amongst others. People suffering from Type 2 Diabetes are prone to develoing Kidney Diseases. It has been proved that taking a high dosage of Thiamin tends to decrease the amount of Albumin in the urine of the affected people, thereby decreasing the tendencies of developing Kidney Diseases.
Increasing your everyday intake of Thiamin is known to prevent cervical cancer in women. Apart from that, ulcerative colitis and chronic diarrhea can be prevented to a great extent by increasing the intake of Thiamin.
Side Effects of Thiamin:
When taken orally in appropriate amounts, Thiamin has proven to be safe. However, it causes allergic reactions and skin irritation when taken over the counter, without a prescription. Thiamin is also unsafe for pregnant or breast feeding women, when taken more than 1.4 mg daily. People suffering from liver problems have difficulty digesting Thiamin into their bloodstream.
Dosage of Thiamin:
For adults suffering from Thiamin deficiency, a 5-30 mg dose daily is recommended. For infants, the RDA is 0.3 mg, for children aged 1-3 years: 0.5 mg ; for children 4-8 years: 0.6 mg; 9-13 years: 0.9 mg; men above 14 years: 1.2 mg, women above 14 years: 1.1 mg; pregnant or breast feeding women: 1.5 mg.
