In most of the cases it is okay if you indulge in sexual intercourse during the course of your pregnancy. Assuming that you do not suffer from any kinds of complications, having sex does not pose any risk to the unborn baby. The baby is surrounded by the amniotic fluid in the amniotic sac which works like a cushion, saving the baby from any eminent danger. In addition to the sac, the mucus plug inside the cervix also helps to guard the baby against any signs of infection.
However, in certain circumstances, you may have to modify your sexual activity or have to abstain from sex altogether in order to protect your unborn baby.
Here are some of the conditions in which your doctor may advise you to abstain from sexual intercourse:
- Placenta Previa
- Premature Labor
- Unexplained bleeding from the vaginal or any other abnormal discharge
- Insufficiency of the cervix
- Dilated cervix
- Rupturing of the membrane or if your water has broken
- An outbreak of Genital Herpes
- Risk of contracting Sexually Transmitted Diseases
There are some other circumstances under which your doctor might suggest you to abstain from sex altogether. In case you are suffering from a risk of preterm delivery, then it might be the case. No matter what the solution is, you should not be shying away from asking your doctor regarding the risk factors and the advice regarding having sex. In case you notice any abnormal signs or symptoms during the course of sex, it is recommended to seek immediate medical attention.
