Anal Sac Disease in Dogs

By Refadoc, Posted on : Monday, 09 March 2015 - 11:03 am IST

If you have seen your dog scooting across the room lying on his bottom, this could be one of the major symptoms of Anal Sac Disease. Dogs have two small pouches located on either side of their anus. They often produce a smelly, oily, brown fluid which helps the dogs to identify their side of their territory and mark their regions. Anal sac disease begins as an uncomfortable impaction which can often progress to an infection or a disease.

Signs and Symptoms of Anal Sac Disease:

Some of the major signs and symptoms of Anal Sac Disease are as follows:

  •          Scooting
  •          Licking or biting of the rear end
  •          A bad odor
  •          Constipation or pain while sitting down

Stages of Anal Sac Disease:

Normally when a dog poops, the fluid in the anal sac is also squeezed out. The fluid inside can become thick and dry so that it plugs up the opening. This is also known as impaction. However, the impacted sacs are very easy to treat. These glands can be emptied gently on their own. Your vet can show you the right way to go about it.

If your dog has repeated impactions, the vet may suggest feeding your dog more fiber rich food in order to increase the size of the fecal material.

If this condition is left untreated, it can turn into a full scale infection. You have to look out for the yellow or bloody pus which oozes out from the sac. This painful condition can cause your dog to act fearful or angry at times. Your vet would need out to wash out the sacs and then give your dog the antibiotics.

An untreated infection can lead to the development of the abscess and could break open. Your vet will need to open and drain out the abscess with the help of antibiotics and anti inflammatory drugs. Daily warm compresses can help out too. If your dog keeps on having problems, your vet may need to remove the anal sacs with the help of the surgery. In a small procedure, your dog will be able to be relived.

In order to prevent the condition in your dog, make sure that your dog is on a healthy diet and he gets plenty of exercise beforehand. Small, obese dogs are at a higher risk of contracting the condition.
