Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Basic Overview

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is known to be a complicated disorder which results in extreme fatigue, which cannot be underlined by any medical condition. This fatigue can worsen with time and physical or mental activity. Also, it does not tend to improve with rest.

The causes of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are unknown. However, there are many theories from viral infections to stress which can cause this condition. Experts are of an opinion that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome can be triggered due to a combination of factors. There is no single test which can determine the presence of this condition in patients. Doctors opt for various tests in order to rule out other conditions which could be exhibiting the same symptoms. The treatment for this condition focuses on relieving the symptoms and the pain.

Causes of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

The real reason behind the occurrence of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is unknown. However, doctors are of an opinion that a large number of factors are responsible towards contributing towards this disease. They are as follows:

  1. Infections: People who have suffered from or are suffering from viral infections are known to develop Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Certain viruses such as Epstein Barr Virus, Human Herpes Virus 6 and Mouse Leukaemia Virus are known to cause this condition.
  2. Weakened Immune System: People suffering from Chronic Immune Disorder are known to have a weakened immune system. This impairment of the immune system is one of the contributing factors towards causing the condition.
  3. Imbalance of the Hormones: People suffering from this condition are known to have abnormal blood levels of hormones – especially the ones which are secreted by the hypothalamus, pituitary glands as well as the adrenal glands. These abnormalities are known to trigger the disease.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Symptoms

There are eight major signs and symptoms for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Some of them are as follows:

  •       Fatigue
  •       Loss of memory and loss of concentration
  •       Soreness of the throat
  •       Enlargement of the lymph nodes around the neck and the armpits
  •       Unexplained pain in the muscles
  •       Pain moving from one joint to the other, without any inflammation or redness
  •       Pattern headaches
  •       Extreme exhaustion after physical or mental activity

Though fatigue can be the outcome of any illness, it is recommended to go in for the testing in case you have been encountering any of the above mentioned symptoms.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Tests and Diagnosis

There are no single tests in order to confirm the diagnosis of the condition. However, since the symptoms of the condition are similar to many other health problems, different tests are used for the diagnosis of the disease.

Several tests are done in order to rule out the possibilities of other illnesses before diagnosing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. These may include the follows:

  1. Sleep Disorders: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome could be caused due to sleeping disorders. Therefore, sleep studies are done in order to make sure that sleep apnoea, restless legs syndrome or any other condition is responsible for the disease.
  2. Medical Problems: Medical conditions such anaemia, diabetes or hypothyroidism can be some of the major contributing factors towards causing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The doctors often conduct lab tests in order to check the blood for any evidence of the above mentioned conditions.
  3. Mental Health Problems: Mental Health problems such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disease or schizophrenia could be some other conditions responsible for causing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Treatment and Drugs

The treatment for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome works towards eliminating the symptoms of the disease. The following are the major treatment options:

Since Chronic Fatigue Syndrome affects people in different ways, the treatment is prescribed depending upon the symptoms and the medical history of the affected person. The following medications are well used for the treatment:

Many people suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome also suffer from depression. Therefore, in order to treat the depression and the problems associated with it, low doses of antidepressants are prescribed to improve the sleep and to relieve the pain.

Sleeping pills are recommended for the patients who find it difficult to fall asleep.

Therapy has proved to emerge as one of the most effective treatments for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Therapy is a two pronged approach which combines both the psychological counselling as well as general exercises for the treatment of the condition. General exercises tend to begin with the basic stretching exercises for a few minutes every day. With these exercises, the strength and the endurance capacity of the person improves gradually.

Psychological counselling helps the patient to figure out the options in order to improve their present condition. It helps the patient to take control of their life and to improve their outlook towards their condition.
