Chyawanprash is a name given to an Ayurvedic supplement which is fortified and constituted with various herbs, herbal extracts as well as minerals. It is also very high in Vitamin C content. The tonic is known to help against the prevention of various diseases via its immunomodulator effects as well as rejuvenation properties. It is commonly used all over the world for the general health and wellbeing. The Ayurvedic properties of Chyawanprash are known to promote the longevity of life and also work as an anti aging tonic.

The mixture just looks like jam and is processed and manufactured using many potent Ayurvedic herbs. This herbal tonic is often brown in color and has a sticky consistency. Its taste varies from sweet, sour to spicy at the same time.

Nutritional Facts and Constituents:

Chyawanprash includes zero cholesterol, contains no Trans fat or calories and is rich in Vitamin C. It contains Saponins in abundance which makes it a very good supplement for the heart, blood vessels or people who have high cholesterol levels in their bloodstream. Chyawanprash is also known to cut down the risk of contracting Cancer.

This tonic contains a mix of around 49 Ayurvedic herbs. Amla is the major ingredient used in the preparation of the tonic. It has been found that in 100 g of Chyawanprash around 15000 mg of Amla is present. It also contains many other powerful herbs which are well known for their health benefits. Some of the major herbs used in the production of the tonic are: Ashwagandha, Vidarikand, Long Pepper, Sandalwood, Cardamom, Tulsi, Brahmi, Arjun, Jatamansi, Neem and many others.

These herbs are often combined to a mixture of honey and clarified butter.

Health Benefits of Chyawanprash:

Chyawanprash is an Ayurvedic Health Tonic which is used in order to maintain the health and improve the immune system of the body. It works vitally in order to fight against diseases and prevents future illnesses.

Chyawanprash is also used in order to enhance the physical performance. It provides excellent strength to the stomach, intestines, liver, lungs, brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys and the reproductive organs. Therefore, the tonic is a complete health supplement.

  • Works as an Anti Aging Supplement: Chyawanprash works as an anti aging supplement. It delays the aging process of the cells and even improves the oxygen supply to the brain and strengthens the heart. Amla – present in Chyawanprash is a powerful antioxidant and is very rich in Vitamin C. It provides around 40% of the daily requirement of Vitamin C needed by the body.
  • Cleans the Digestive System: Chyawanprash also works to improve the digestion and cleanses the alimentary canal with the help of the Phyto nutrients. It also contains fiber content which relieves constipation due to the presence of the herbs. For a patient suffering from Constipation, this supplement works quite well to relieve the condition. The tonic provides strength to the intestines and also improves the peristaltic movements of the intestines.
  • Lowers the Cholesterol and Triglycerides: A 10 gram serving of Chyawanprash contains around 5.25 grams of Saponins which help to lower down the levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream. The Saponins present in Chyawanprash block down the absorption of cholesterol in the body. Certain secondary bile salts increase the risk of colon cancer manifold. However, the bacteria present in the gut tend to produce some secondary bile acids from the primary bile salts. The Saponins present in Chyawanprash bind the bile acids and thereby reduce the risk of cancer.
  • Glowing and Clear Skin: Since Chyawanprash is quite rich in Phyto nutrients and Vitamin C, it improves the complexion of the skin. With the daily intake of Chyawanprash, the risk of dry skin is decreased, giving you a glowing and clearer skin.
  • Controls Inflammation: Flavonoids or plant pigments present in Chyawanprash prevent the overstimulation of the immune system and therefore prevent unwanted immune responses as well. It improves the immunity and alters the natural behavior and working of the mast cells, T cells and B Cells. This prevents excessive inflammation and also improves the overall body strength towards external stimuli.

Dosage of Chyawanprash:

Age Groups:

  • Years : 1 gram

1-5 Years: 5 grams (Half teaspoon)

6-12 Years: 10 grams (One teaspoon)

Above 12 years: 5-20 grams (1-4 teaspoon)

Pregnant women: One teaspoon in the morning and evening each.

Side effects of Consuming Chyawanprash:

There are no or almost minimal side effects which have been reported with the consumption of Chyawanprash. Some side effects are reported in people who are suffering from indigestion, gas, abdominal bloating or distention. Most side effects are reported when people consume Chyawanprash along with milk. This could occur due to the use of milk as an adjuvant.

People suffering from the below mentioned conditions should not consume Chyawanprash:

  • Diabetes
  • Gas and Flatulence
  • Abdominal Distention
  • Frequent urination at night time
  • Night falls

How to consume Chyawanprash? (With or without milk)

Just one or two spoons of Chyawanprash are considered to be ideal for the entire body. However, there are many questions regarding the consumption of Chyawanprash. People are confused as to how one should be consuming it. Here are a few tips:

Chyawanprash can be taken in with warm milk. It is recommended above cold milk as it quickens the digestion process.

Some people are even considering taking Chyawanprash with Ghee or Clarified butter. However, since ghee is already an ingredient of it, it is not advised to take extra ghee along with it. Milk or water proves to be a better agent, rather than ghee.

Chyawanprash can be easily taken either with warm milk or with warm water. Taking Chyawanprash with milk is recommended as it contributes towards delivering all the major components of the tonic to all the cells of the body.
