Stomach Swelling or Bloating can be a life threatening condition for dogs. In order to keep your canine companion in good health, it is very important to make sure that you know the signs of the bloating.

Causes of Bloating

ü  Stomach swelling in dogs is serious condition. If your dog’s abdomen looks bloated or unusual, it is important to check with a vet as proper timing is very critical for the diagnosis. Some of the major causes of Bloating are as follows:

  •          Gastric Dilation Volvulus:

This is also known as the mother of all emergencies. This condition can be fatal to the dog within a couple of hours. The bloat occurs when the gas or the food stretches within a dog’s stomach. This condition occurs when the distended stomach rotates and trapped the gas inside leading to blocking off the blood supply to the stomach. Though this condition is very painful, it could be caused due to heavy exercise after eating or swallowing of air. Some of the major causes of the condition are as follows:

  1. Being deep crested. Some of the breeds such as Great Dane, St. Bernard as well as the Weimaraner are at the greatest risk of suffering from the bloat.
  2. Feeding your dog only one meal per day
  3. A family history of Bloating
  4. Eating too quickly
  5. Feeding your dog food with a high cereal content
  6. Being too older. The dogs between the ages of 7-12 years are at a higher risk of suffering from the disease.

Preventing the bloating can be very hard because there are so many reasons behind the condition. However, there are some of the ways to prevent the bloating:

ü  Feeding your dog two or more meals daily

ü  Including canned foods or table scraps to your dog.

ü  Make sure that your dog rests after having a full meal. Make sure that your dog does not exercise after a full stomach.

  •          Cushing’s Syndrome:

Some dogs with a pot bellies look maybe suffering from Hyperadrenocorticism or Cushing’s syndrome. This condition is caused due to the overproduction of the hormone cortical. It is more common dogs above the age of 6 or more. Cushing’s syndrome is caused due to the Pituitary gland or due to the overproduction of the hormone. Newer medications as well as surgery are available for the treatment of this condition.

  • Ascites: Ascites is caused due to the accumulation of the fluid in the abdomen which leads to swelling. This could be caused due to a variety of problems such as heart failure, liver disease, kidney problems as well as severe intestinal disease. Treatment for Ascites varies depending on the condition which is causing it.
  • Some of the other conditions which lead to Stomach Swelling or Bloating are internal bleeding due to trauma or rupturing of the mass. Intestinal obstruction and tumors are also a major reason behind the disease. Severe roundworm infection in puppies can also cause the swelling of the stomach.
