Dog Obesity: Tips to Lose Weight

By Refadoc, Posted on : Monday, 09 March 2015 - 11:10 am IST

According to a recent survey, it has been found that around 10% of the total dogs all over the world are suffering from obesity. If you are unsure whether your dog is suffering from obesity, here are some of the signs which you should be checking for:

  •          If you are able to find handfuls of fats to grab ( especially around the stomach and the chest areas)
  •          If it is hard for you to check out for signs of ribs, spine or other bones which are found underneath the body fat.
  •          The sagging of the abdomen, which is very noticeable around the side areas.
  •          You are not able to see the waistline of your dog from above.

Once you have your dog on the dieting plan, it is also recommended to consult your vet as soon as possible. Your overweight dog could be suffering from a medical condition or could be from an over eating and not exercising. So, a weight plan is not always the best solution to all the problems.

When does your dog need help?

If you are sure that your pet is ready for a weight loss plan, make sure that you discuss this well with a doctor before figuring out the plan for your dog on your own. Diet food is not always the answer for dog obesity. You need to work on a strict portion control. If your dog does not like the diet plan, you may try to add different condiments to your plan.

Splitting your dog’s food into different portions per day is going to work well for your pet. Another way to get rid of the excessive calories is to use vegetables as treats. Try using beans and carrots in order to add more greens to the diet.

Adding movement to the mix:

Exercise plays a major role in making sure that your dog is losing all the excessive weight that he has gained. Try walking your dog regularly and you will be able to get the requisite results. Keeping a steady pace can make all the difference in the world. 10-20 minutes of walking everyday is going to make sure that your dog is able to maintain a regular weight loss plan.

Weight loss can take a long time to go through. Check out your dog’s weightily month in order to take a note as to how the diet plan is working on for your pet and you. Try contacting your vet for food and supplements. The changes will take at least six months to develop. Try remembering the fact that there is a lot that you can do to make sure that your dog is healthy.
