Food Allergy and Intolerance in Dogs

Allergies are not fun for anyone. If they are not any fun for you, they aren’t for your dog as well. Food allergies and intolerance is caused due to a reaction to one particular ingredient in the diet. Allergy is an abnormal response to the food or an additive in the food. There are two main classes of adverse reactions: one which affects the immune system and the one which does not affect the immune system.

Causes of Food Allergies:

It may take either months or years before your dog is able to develop an allergic response to one particular food group. However, once your dog is allergic, it will always have a negative reaction to that food. Here are some of the major causes of Allergies:

  • Food: Food is one of the most common causes of food allergies. In dogs, beef, wheat and milk products may cause allergies.
  • Damage: Inflammation, infection as well as surgery can damage the digestive system which may lead to food allergies and intolerance.
  • Age: Food allergies or intolerance can occur at any stage.
  • Breed: Some breeds of dogs are more likely to develop food allergies or intolerance.

Signs and Symptoms of Food Allergies:

Some of the major signs and symptoms of Food Allergies are as follows:

  •          Vomiting or Diarrhea
  •          Flatulence
  •          Frequent scratching or loss of hair
  •          Redness and inflammation of the skin
  •          Ear problems, chronic in nature
  •          Poor growth in case of young dogs
  •          Coughing, wheezing as well as sneezing

Treatment of Dog Allergies:

Food Allergies can last for a lifetime. The main goal is to manage the allergies and the adverse reactions to the food and to avoid the ingredient responsible for the allergies. If you dog suffer from allergies, it is very important to feed the right food to the dog.

Dietary elimination trials are one of the best and the most practical ways to manage the allergies. The food which your dog eats should be balanced. It is very important to remove all the other access to the dog feed. If you dog have an allergic reaction to the meat, make sure that you try a new food which has a new protein source.
