The medium chain triglycerides found in Coconut Oil are known to increase the overall energy expenditure of the body as compared to the same amount of calories which are obtained from the longer chain fats. One research study has even concluded finding around 15-30 grams of MCT’s per day increased the overall body energy expenditure by almost 5%!

4) Protects your from Infections:

5) Improves Blood Cholesterol Levels:

Coconut contains a lot of Saturated fats which are known to help your blood lipid profile in a better way. The saturated fats are known to raise the levels of the HDL Cholesterol and even change the LDL Cholesterol to a benign subtype. These lead to an improvement in the cardiovascular risk factors and lead to a reduced rate of heart disease over a longer term.

6) Hair Care and Health:

Coconut is considered great for your hair. It helps in the healthy growth of your hair and also imparts a shiny quality to it. It is also considered to be effective in reducing the protein loss from your hair, which often leads to unattractive and unhealthy hair. Coconut hair can be applied to the hair before taking a shower. It works as an effective conditioner and also helps in the re growth of the damaged hair. It contains essential properties which are needed for the nourishment and healing of damaged hair. With a regular massage of the coconut oil, your scalp will remain free of dandruff. Coconut oil also keeps your hair free from lice and lice eggs. These are some of the major reasons why coconut oil is a common ingredient used in the manufacture of shampoos and conditioners. Coconut Oil is applied topically for hair care.

7) Skin Care Benefits:

Coconut Oil is an excellent product for the skin as well. It works as an effective moisturizer on different skin tones. It’s benefits to the skin are quite similar to that of a mineral oil. However, unlike mineral oil, Coconut Oil is not known to have any side effects on the skin. Coconut Oil is a safe solution if you are suffering from dry or flaky skin. It also delays the aging process of the skin and treats the appearance of wrinkles or sagging of the skin which comes with age. It also helps to treat various skin problems such as Psoriasis, Dermatitis, Eczema and various other skin problems. This is one of the major reasons why Coconut Oil is used as a base ingredient in various products such as Soaps, Lotions and creams for the skin care. It also helps to prevent premature aging and degenerative diseases due to its anti oxidant properties.

8) Builds up the Immunity:

Coconut Oil is known to be greatly beneficial for the immune system. It helps to fortify the immune system as it contains antimicrobial lipids, Lauric Acid, Capric Acid as well as Caprylic Acids. These acids contain antifungal, antibacterial as well as antiviral properties. The human body is known to convert the Lauric Acid into Monolaurin which is an effective way to deal with viruses and bacteria.

9) Rejuvenates your Skin:

Coconut Oil contains a rich amount of Vitamin E which is quite beneficial for the skin. Vitamin E is needed by the skin for the healthy growth, repair of the skin and also maintains a smooth tone of the skin, protecting it from cracking. Coconut Oil also helps to guard the skin against premature aging and wrinkles. It has vital antioxidant properties which come a long way to enhance your skin. Coconut Oil is a major ingredient used in the preparation of skin nourishing products. Being rich in proteins, it keeps your skin healthy and rejuvenated. It contributes towards the growth of the cellular health and repairs the tissues of the skin. Since Coconut Oil rarely becomes rancid, it can be preserved for a long time, without soiling.

How to add Coconut Oil to your diet:

It is recommended to avoid any packaged or manufactured foods which contain partially hydrogenated Coconut Oil. During cooking, it is recommended to choose Virgin Coconut Oil and to use it in moderation. Coconut can be best used during baking owing to its sweet, coco nutty flavor. It can also substitute well instead of butter during the course of baking.

It is recommended to store coconut oil in a cool and dark place. Just like other saturated fats, it is solid when stored at room temperature and liquidifies upon heating.

Selecting the Correct Coconut Oil:

In the market, you would be able to find two different brands of Coconut Oil: Refined and Unrefined oil.

Refined Coconut Oil: is known to the tasteless and odorless. It can be used for the cooking purposes and it is resistant to very high temperatures.

Unrefined Coconut Oil: This Oil is also known as Virgin Coconut Oil and is known for its pleasant taste and odor. It is used in making creams and cosmetics.

Storing Coconut Oil:

Here are a few simple steps to use and store Coconut Oil:

  1. Once you have opened the bottle of the oil, it is recommended to store it in a fridge. This will help you to extend the shelf life of the oil by about 6 months.
  2. Store the oil in a dark place as sunlight can easily damage it.
  3. Make sure that the lid of the oil is shut tightly as the reaction with oxygen can lead to the breaking down of the oil.

I use Coconut Oil for hot oil treatments before washing my hair - mixing it with Jojoba oil and Sweet Almond oil. This is fantastic for that and is really moisturizing. My hot oil treatments NEVER have the same effect without coconut oil. I've only used this specific product once but it works just fine, smells nice and is easy to use.
I can't speak for anyone who uses it for food or skin problems. But for my natural curls, it definitely quenches their thirst!
