Honey comes packed with many properties and nutrients which make it a great food to be added to your diet while you are pregnant. Here are some of the most amazing health benefits of Honey:

1) Relieves Cough and Cold:

Getting a cough and cold during pregnancy can be a critical situation. Treating this minor problem is not a problem! Pregnant women can use honey in order to get rid of their cough. You can mix honey with a few cloves of garlic. The garlic can be pounded and could be preserved inside a small jar. Add honey to it and cover it tightly. You can allow this mixture to blend well and need to leave it for 24 hours before using it. Taking one tablespoon of this solution is going to help you get rid of the cough.

2) Helps to treat Heartburn:

Heartburn is quite a common condition experienced by pregnant women. It occurs when the acids inside the stomach turn upwards towards the food pipe. Having heartburn can be quite a bother to the pregnant women. This can cause the women to lose track of their appetite. Therefore, it is quite essential to deal with it as soon as possible. The organic properties of honey come to the rescue in such a case. Mix a tablespoon of honey along with a glass of milk and consume it when you seem to be suffering from heartburn. Pregnant women would find that this simple mixture provides a ready relief for heartburn.

3) Cures Sore Throat:

Some medications can be quite unsafe to consume when you are pregnant. Taking a lot of medications during the course of your pregnancy might cause harm to your unborn child. Therefore, when you are suffering from a minor condition such as Sore throat, it is better to consume honey in order to get rid of the condition. You can mix lemon and honey along with a glass of warm water. This mixture can be used to gargle with in order to get rid of the pain associated with sore throat. You can also directly swallow a spoonful of honey. This natural syrup is going to offer you relief against sore throat without putting any danger to the life of your baby.

It is quite safe and beneficial to consume honey, even when you are pregnant. However, it should not be used in excess and moderation should be practiced.

Allergic Reaction to Honey:

Honey contains certain spores which are known to cause harm to the mother or the fetus. It is advised to talk to your doctor and get an allergy test done, in case you are changing the brand of honey which you usually consume.

In case spores are present, it will not cause harm to your baby. This is because the spores are not known to tolerate the acidic pH and they often die in the presence of the digestive system, hence not reaching to the baby.

Tips to Remember:

Yes, we know that honey is safe to be consumed while you are pregnant. However, there are some major points which you should be keeping in mind before consuming it:

  1. Make sure to pick up pasteurized honey while you are pregnant. This is because the raw forms of honey may contain certain disease causing bacteria.
  2. Make sure to buy honey from trusted brands only. The trusted brands make sure to conduct certain extensive processing of the honey before bottling it up and marketing it. This makes the health risks associated with honey to come down to a bare minimum.
  3. Choose a brand of honey which has undergone minimal processing and is organically produced.
  4. Many raw forms of honey contain the strains of a bacterium known as Clostridium Botulinim which is known to cause a disease like condition known as Botulism.

Above all, honey is a great alternative as compared to white sugar, as it comes packed with many health benefits. You can consume it without worries during the course of your pregnancy as long as it is pure and organic. In case you still have any concerns, it is recommended to check in with your doctor.
