How to Cope With a Hangover

Late night partying with friends and had a little too much to drink? Well, waking up the morning after could mean coping with a horrible hangover. If you are experiencing headache, dry mouth, drowsiness and anxiety along with a queasy feeling, then you are definitely having a bad hangover.
Now, there are ways of preventing yourself from having a hangover. The best idea would be to keep a check on your alcohol intake and limit yourself to just one or two drinks. Apart from that you can also have a small meal like a salad or pasta before going out for the night. Researchshow that having food while drinking actually helps in diluting the concentration of alcohol in your stomach. So, snack on some healthy titbits while drinking to reduce the morning after woes.

If you already had a great night and drank like there is no tomorrow, then regretting those last few drinks won’t help anymore. Here are some ways to get rid of that horrible hangover.

Get rid of dehydration

From the minute you start drinking, the alcohol dehydrates the body. Drinking lots of water will help the body rehydrate and also ease you from the hangover. Another alternative would be to have coconut water. Tender coconut water is rich in electrolytes and it is also extremely healthy for you.


Hangovers come with a nasty headache and to beat that drink some hot tea. Ginger tea is one option. You can also have tea with honey and a squeeze of lemon to give you the extra lift.

To make ginger tea, just cut a few slices of ginger and bruise them slightly before adding to boiling them with water. Ginger helps relieve nausea and indigestion which are common with hangovers.


Drinking juice works wonders when it comes to relieving you from hangovers. Juice not only helps replenish the lost vitamins but also boosts the blood sugar levels in the body. And don’t forget that it fills up your stomach too!

Although drinking citrus juices is not recommended as they might be too acidic and upset the stomach, apple juice and vegetable juices like tomato and carrot are good options.

Fill your stomach

Though you might not feel like eating much when you have a hangover, filling up your stomach with some light food will actually make you feel better. Consuming excess alcohol brings down your blood sugar level and that can cause weakness and light-headedness. Having carbohydrate rich food can boosts up your sugar level. However, stay away from fatty food, stick to light food like cereal, crackers and toasts with butter or honey. A meal of rice, soup and potatoes will also do the trick.


Excessive intake of alcohol disrupts your REM sleep. Although a little alcohol can make you feel sleepy, too much of it can actually keep you awake. Sleeping off a hangover will not only let you pass the dreadful time but also give your body time to recover from it.

Apart from these, you can also pop an aspirin or ibuprofen to take care of the headaches. Taking a multivitamin will help restore the lost nutrients in the body. Some researchers also suggest having eggs or asparagus to cure a hangover.

All these are just a few ways to get rid of a hangover. To prevent having a bad morning after, you should stickto lighter drinks and not mix them up. Also having a glass of water after every drink helps.

However, the best way to deal with a hangover is not to have one in the first place! Drink responsibly and you will never have to suffer another hangover again.
