Hypothermia in Dogs

By Refadoc, Posted on : Monday, 09 March 2015 - 11:13 am IST

Despite the thick fur, low temperatures can cause the dog to lose its body temperature. This leads to hypothermia. If this is sustained, the lower body temperature can lead to severe complications and can even become fatal.

Signs and Symptoms of Hypothermia:

One of the first signs and symptoms of Hypothermia are paleness and strong shivering. This can also be followed by listlessness and a lethargic feeling. The frostbite in some of the other body parts also includes tail, tips of the ears, scrotum as well as the foot pads. If this condition is left untreated, it can even lead to com and heart failure.

Causes of Hypothermia:

The following are some of the major causes of Hypothermia:

  • Exposure to cold for a long duration of time
  • Wetness of the skin and the fur
  • Submersion of the pet in cold water for a long time
  • Shock
  • Anesthesia which has been prescribed for a long time

Treatment and Prevention of Hypothermia:

In case your pet is suffering from Hypothermia, make sure that you follow the below mentioned rules:

  • Warm up some blankets on a radiator or in a clothes’ dryer.
  • Wrap up your dog in these blankets.
  • Wrap up a hot water bottle in a towel and place it against the abdomen of the dog. Do not use this is in an unwrapped condition as it will burn the skin.
  • If your dog is conscious, make sure that you provide him warmed fluids to drink.
  • Check out the temperature of the dog after every 10 minutes.

Hypothermia can be easily prevented by avoiding the prolonged exposure to cold temperature. This is very important for the dogs that are considered to be at a higher risk of contracting the disease. Certain factors which increase the risk of an animal suffering from Hypothermia are old age; lower body fat as well as hypothyroidism. Make sure that you keep dog clothes, boots and other accessories handy every time the cold season sets in,
