Meeting the parents of your partner for the first time can bring jitters to anyone! With the festive season approaching, it could be the time when you have to face them and make a long lasting impression. The best advice that anyone can give you is to be yourself. If your partner is heads over heels in love with you, shouldn’t their parents feel the same? So, here are a few simple tips which can help you to make a good impression:
Do your background research:
Don’t you like people who share the same interests like you? Like attracts like! Ask your partner beforehand about the likes and dislikes of their parents. Find the things which you hold in common and try working them for your benefit. If you devote a little time and do your homework, you will be able to able to work your way smoothly throughout the meeting.
Dress for the occasion, try not showing off:
We know that you are trying to make a good first impression. However, you should not dress to kill because all you want to do is fit in the family. Dressing up wrongly is the first mistake people often make. Your emphasis should be less on impressing and should be more on trying to fit in with the host family.
Don’t go empty handed:
We are not saying that you should go with lavish presents for the entire family. All we are saying is that you should not be going empty handed. Taking a small but a thoughtful present is a token of acknowledgement towards the invitation which has been extended by the family to you. Discuss with your partner beforehand regarding the present which you should be taking along. Flowers, a bottle of wine or a thoughtful gift for your hosts would be appropriate.
Ask to Help around:
We know that you are a guest in the house, however, offering a little help to your partner’s mother or father never hurts. Help them to set the table or add finishing touch to your meals. This little gesture is going to go a long way. They are not going to remember what you said, but they are going to remember what you did. This is the secret to make a long lasting impression.
Aim for holidays or festive occasions:
If you ever get an invite to meet your partner’s parents before the holidays or during the festive season, go for it. Going for a brunch or a dinner with them within a large gathering is going to make it very easy for you to wade through.
Send a Thank You Card:
This tradition has lasted for a reason. Sending a thank you note to the parents or sending an email goes a long way to show your etiquettes. You need to keep it simple however. Just thank them for the time that you spent with them and mention a special moment which you enjoyed the most. Also, never cease to mention how you are looking forward to meet them again in the near future!
