Potassium and the growth and maintenance of body go hand in hand.  This mineral has emerged to be one of the most vital one in order to maintain the water balance of the cells in the body as well as the body fluid. Potassium also has emerged to be one of the major minerals that help to maintain a proper working heart function. The deficiency of this mineral could lead to muscular cramps, twitching as well as nervousness in the muscles, irregularity of the heartbeat as well as insomnia and kidney failure.

Sources of Potassium:

Fruits:  Fruits such as Avocado, Bananas, Cherries, Dates, Grapefruit, Kiwi, Litchee, Papaya, Pomegranate as well as watermelon are excellent sources of Potassium.

Vegetables: Vegetables such as Squash, Beans, Potatoes, Pumpkins, Swiss potatoes as well as Spirulina are great sources of Potassium.

Nuts: Nuts like almonds, Chestnuts, Coconuts, Oats, Pistachios, Rye and Sunflower are great sources of Potassium.

Legumes such as Beans, Edamame, Kidney beans, Lima beans, Soy beans and white beans too are enriched with Potassium.

Amongst meats and other sources, beef, Tuna, Salmon, Sardines, Pollock, Perch and Herring are enriched with Potassium. Goat’s milk, Cow’s milk, Yoghurt, Ground meat, Sausages and Bacon too are great sources of Potassium.

Daily Need:

Adults and adolescents require around 2000 mg of Potassium per day.
