A lot of teens who are being assessed for the presence of the sleep disorder ‘narcolepsy’ are also been screened for the use of Marijuana because the drug has been excessively associated with the daytime sleepiness amongst youngsters.

People suffering from Narcolepsy are known to show the same symptoms as suggested by a recent study. Around 383 children were evaluated for excessive daytime sleepiness and it was found that around 10% of those between the ages of 13 to 18 were tested positive for the use of Marijuana. Teen boys are more likely to test positive for the drug usage as compared to the girls. None of the children were below the age of 13, according to the test reports.

The findings have gone ahead a step in order to highlight that the urine drug screening need to be conducted for children who exhibit the same symptoms such as Narcolepsy. Many children who have tested positive urine drug testing for Marihuana and were also testing consistent with narcolepsy had shown improvement of the symptoms of excessive daytime sleepiness after the enrollment in a community sponsored drug program. Testing for the use of Marijuana is one of the most important tools when screening for narcolepsy is done in teens.
