Is it safe to eat Deli Meats while you are pregnant?

It is not safe and recommended to eat precooked meats such as Deli meats, hot dogs or even pate while you are pregnant. Since pregnant women are at a 20 times higher risk to develop Listeriosis, it is recommended to stay away from deli meats.

Listeria is known to cross the barrier of the placenta and can have devastating effect on the health of the baby. If a pregnant woman consumes deli meat which has been infected by a Listeria, there is a high risk of contracting preterm delivery, miscarriage and death in some cases.

Contamination of the deli meat could be caused due to the improper handling of the meat. However, whatever may be the reason, the bacteria is known to grow well even under cold refrigerator temperatures. So, when we may be thinking that the meat is safe, it could still be contaminated.

It is also recommended for pregnant women to wash their hands properly after handling deli meats. Listeria is also found in the unpasteurized milk, soft cheese as well as uncooked poultry. When you are pregnant, it is also recommended to stay away from the cheese made from unpasteurized milk.
