Is it safe to use Nasal Decongestant spray or Afrin during pregnancy?Created On : March 18, 2015
Nasal Decongestant sprays are very safe to use during the course of the pregnancy. However, their use is not generally recommended to mothers to be in general. The reason behind this is that after using them for a couple of days, the mothers to be start to get back their rebound congestion which can make them worse than they started in the beginning.
If a plain saline nose spray is not doing the trick for you, it is recommended to stick with an ointment such as Vicks VapoRub and to apply it around the bottom of each nostril for better effect. It is a general good idea to use a nasal decongestant in case you have the symptoms of a sinus infection such as yellow or green mucus accompanied by fever.
In case you have developed a bacterial infection within your sinuses, there are chances of the bacteria to release toxins within your bloodstream, triggering premature labor.
The major risk when it comes to using a nasal decongestant is that you can become habituated to use them and in the end can feel stuffy when you are not using them.
