Is it safe to consume Soy Sauce while you are pregnant? Could there be any harmful side effects of it?
Soy Sauce is made after fermenting soy beans mixed with grains in a salty brine mixture. Most of soy sauce is made from defatted soybean meals and grains, mixed with chemicals. However, during the process of production, a group of chemical contaminants known by the name of Chloropropanols are produced as a byproduct of the method. Researchers hold a mixed viewpoint of the safety of Chloropropanols on pregnant women.
It is always best to choose a natural soya sauce. Due to the high salt content, soy sauce can lead to fluid retention and swelling. It is always recommended to consume soy sauce in moderation while you are pregnant.
Adding a dash or two of the soy sauce in your meals is not going to be much of a problem. You can also chose for a lower salt version of the sauce if you are concerned about the high salt content.
